Why Finland?
Finland is extremely safe and highly industrialized Nordic welfare state, which, despite of its small population, is one of the leading European countries in high tech and biotechnology. It has an excellent education system that has been globally acclaimed. The PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) results have for years placed Finland among the top countries in the world. One of the greatest attractions of Finland are its endless areas of unspoiled nature. It is known for its magnificent lakes and acres of woods, ridges and fells. The climate includes four distinct seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter, each of them beautiful in their own unique way.
City of Jyväskylä
Jyväskylä is a safe, vibrant city at the heart of Finland. It is the seventh biggest city of Finland with the population of 147,000 people. Being a home to almost 40,000 students, it also boasts of being one of the most youthful and energetic locations in the country. It offers a wide selection of cultural experiences, recreation and sports activities, in addition to high-quality education and business environment.
City of festivals and light
The city of Jyväskylä provides a wide range of activities for people of all ages. Summer is a particularly active time of the year because of the variety of events and festivals held. Perhaps the most important event of the year is the World Championship Rally competition, Secto Rally Finland, which attracts a whopping number of almost half a million spectators at the beginning of August. Moreover, Jyväskylä also hosts a variety of musical and cultural events, including the oldest city festival of the Nordic countries, Jyväskylä festival.
As the days become shorter along the autumn, you can see the city glitter with thousands of lights, being justly entitled the name City of Light. A festival of the same name that is held every autumn celebrates Jyväskylä's status as a pioneer in street lighting, pursuing not only energy efficiency and safety but wonderful aesthetics as well.
Alvar Aalto and the cultural climate
Perhaps the best known and most celebrated Finnish designer, the world famous Alvar Aalto has left his mark in Jyväskylä. At the Alvar Aalto museum, designed by Aalto himself, visitors can learn about the history of the designer and marvel at his designs, which range from miniatures of his buildings to furniture, glassware and paintings. Moreover, many of his works can be seen in real life in the architecture of the city. In Jyväskylä there are more buildings designed by Aalto than in any other place in the world. Several of the university buildings, the City Theater and the public swimming hall, for example, are of his design.
Jyväskylä offers also a rich selection of other cultural experiences, including various museums, concerts, exhibitions, and musicals and plays at the City Theater. Moreover, the Conference center Paviljonki hosts a diverse set of events, fairs and conferences.
Nature and sports
Jyväskylä is located in the attractive Central Finland area, surrounded by unspoiled nature. It is edged by the second biggest lake of Finland, Päijänne, and has numerous other idyllic lakes and vast forests in its vicinity. There are also countless of parks and walking tracks, several located at the very center of the city.
The lakes are an essential part of life in Jyväskylä, offering places to swim, relax, fish and sail. During the summer time it is possible to aboard one of the many cruise boats in the Lutakko harbor to enjoy the waterways on board. In winter, on the other hand, the frozen Lake Jyväsjärvi functions as a skating rink and cross-country skiing track for sport enthusiasts.
The University of Jyväskylä has the only Faculty of Sports and Health Sciences Education in Finland, explaining the city's sports-orientation. In Jyväskylä there is an abundance of sports clubs and associations, in addition to the excellent university sports. Countless options for exercise range from down-hill skiing to indoor climbing.
Transportation
Travelling in and out of the city is easy because of the excellent transportation connections to all over Finland. Located in the intersection of highways, it is easily reached by car. Moreover, buses and trains depart regularly from the long-distance travel center and Tikkakoski airport is located 23 kilometers from the city center. Getting around within Jyväskylä is also easy, since the city center is conveniently compact and the most important locations are easy to reach on foot, by bike or by the local traffic.
